LION’S CLUB INTERNATIONAL (CORRECTED) PEARL RIVER CHAPTER CONTACT: CHRISTOPHER ZUCCARO – PRESIDENT 914-661-7923 APRIL 22, 2002 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE How much money would you give to name a hero? The Pearl River Lion’s Club is asking that of local residents this coming Saturday and Sunday at Shoprite in Pearl River as they kick-off their campaign to raise $2,000 for Guiding Eyes for the Blind. Guiding Eyes for the Blind, located in Yorktown Heights, is an independent non-profit organization, considered one of the leading guide dog training schools in the world. It’s not unusual for any one of it’s four footed graduates to perform heroically. But never was this more vividly demonstrated than on September 11, when Salty, guided his owner, Omar Rivera down from the 71st floor of Tower 1 of the World Trade Center. For $2,000, the Pearl River Lion’s Club will be able to pick a name for a Guide Eye dog. The local branch of the largest philanthropic organization in the world, will be sharing this opportunity with donors. On Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., members of the Lion’s Club will be standing outside of Shoprite, 26 North Middletown Road in Pearl River, selling chances for people to name a guide dog. For donations as small as a dollar, participants can suggest a name that will be added to others in a large container. Once the Lion’s Club has collected $2,000, a name will be chosen from the container by a resident of Rockland ARC, one of the other organizations the Lion’s Club helps to support. Any money collected over the $2,000 will also be donated to Guiding Eyes or one of the other many sight related organizations, which the Lion’s have dedicated themselves to help. Matching fund corporate donations are sought for this and all other Lion's Club philanthropic endeavors. Christopher Zuccaro, Pearl River chapter president said, "Lion's Club, the largest service organization in the world, was inspired directly by Helen Keller and tasked by her to bring sight to the world. We have undertaken this task, to raise money to support Guiding Eyes as part of that mission. One hundred percent of the money we collect goes directly to charity. Any and all operating costs are covered by members dues and contributions."
